04. Working Practices and Legislation

4.1     Demonstrate good health and safety practice when working on film      productions

Why is health and safety important when working on film productions?

If there is bad health and safety then the whole production can halted, such as if the main actor is badly injured and can no longer be in the rest of the film. As well as this by not meeting proper health and safety regulations, a production can sued, shut down and have people arrested.

What are some of the key safety issues relating to film production?

Safe locations, not trip hazards, safe equipment

How did you apply good health and safety practice when making your film?

We had no trip hazards and knew that all the locations we used posed not risk of safety to anyone.

Include your risk assessment and explain why this is important.

4.2     Explain why copyright is important in the film industry

What is Copyright?

Copyright is the legal right over a concept/idea for a fixed number of years that means nobody else can steal your ideas or work.

Why does copyright law exist?

Copyright law exists to stop the theft of intellectual property and to make sure that the owner gets the proper money and credit for creating the property.

What kind of work is covered by copyright?

Musical, dramatic, literary, motion pictures, architectural plans, pictorial works, sound recordings and pantomimes are all covered by copyright.

What might happen if you were to use copyrighted material in your film?

You could get sued by the owner of the copyrighted material and have your film either forced to get rid of said copyrighted material or have the film not allowed to be released.

How can you make sure not to infringe copyright law in your film?

Search up and read up to make sure none of your material has been done before and is already copyrighted or if a certain material is even copyrighted in the first place. Check what and what doesn’t fall under fair use and if you really want to use an existing idea check what stories and ideas are already in the public domain, such as Robin Hood or Alice in Wonderland.

How has copyright law and other IP regulation affected your film production?

So far, when writing this on 19/11/19, copyright has not been an issue as the script and story we are doing is not based off nor using any copyrighted materials.

  1. Feedback for 4.1

Define what you mean by ‘bad health and safety’ as this phrasing sounds reductive. Remove questions and write in full sentences. Please include your risk assessment and talk about the hazards when even filming in safe locations in terms of the equipment you are using.

    Feedback for 4.2

This is great, once again just a case of removing questions and making it flow coherently as a paragraph. At the time you were working on this project, you hadn’t faced any issues with copyright. Could you pre-empt any issues that you might face in the shoot day?

(I know you’ll be writing this after having done the shoot day but that’s fine)
